Tonight there will be a special showing of the documentary film Simonal(2009) from Brazil.

This is a documentary about Simonal's musical career and his downfall as his involvement with the
dictatorship ignited a process of deleting him from national memory.

The Hurt Locker Discussion Points

Thanks to all show came out and supported the film screening of The Hurt Locker and also to those who stayed to participate in the discussion. There was a great turnout!

Here are some discussion points to consider- Feel free to express any thoughts in the comment section of the blog.

1. In certain sequences, the camera almost becomes your eyes, as though there is no camera and no cameraman. A little like Errol Morris's style in Fog of War. Do you agree?

2. In the opening scene is a quote from Chris Hedges=s War is a Force That Gives Us Meaning: I've put more of it here (from p. 3 of his book):

The rush of battle is a potent and often lethal addiction, for war is a drug, one I ingested for many years. It is peddled by mythmakers ... It dominates culture, distorts memory, corrupts language, and infects everything around

it ...

The enduring attraction of war is this: Even with its destruction and carnage it can give us what we long for in life. It can give us purpose, meaning, a reason for living.

What characters and scenes from the film confirm this idea in your mind (if any do)?

Perhaps compare this idea (maybe in James=s character?) with ...

Anthony Swofford in the book Jarhead, a Marine sniper whose entire training comes down to wanting to fulfill his duty, but when toward the end of the book he asks for permission to complete his duty (AI request permission to take shots. The men in the tower are perfect targets.) he is told that he cannot (ANegative on permission to shoot ... If their buddies next to them start taking rounds in the head ... they won=t surrender ...).

He completes the thought at the end of the book with, To be a marine, a true marine, you must kill. With all of your training, all of your expertise, if you don't kill, you're not a combatant, even if you have been fired at, and so you are not a marine: receiving fire is easy ... You will receive the Combat Action Ribbon, and if unlucky enough to have been hit but not fatally, a Purple Heart, or if you are hit fatally, your mother will receive your Purple Heart, but whether you are dead or not, you haven=t, with your own hands, killed a hostile enemy soldier. This means everything ... During the darkest nights you=d even offer your life to go back in time, back to the Desert for the chance to kill.

Ron Kovic in Born on the Fourth of July, who, although paralyzed and mistreated in a VA hospital, has an extremely difficult time readjusting to his family and home in Massapequa, NY

Mary Anne Bell, a character in The Things They Carried, by Tim O=Brien, who comes to visit her boyfriend in Vietnam, and finds herself losing her innocence to the seduction of war, to the point where she says, Sometimes I want to eat this place. Vietnam. I want to swallow the whole country - the dirt, the death - I just want to eat it and have it there inside me.... When I=m out there at night, I feel close to my own body, I can feel my blood moving ... You can't feel like that anywhere else.

3. Is the film about war or about the human condition in a war setting?

4. This film was made while the Iraq war was still in play. Could that have been done during the American war in Vietnam?

5. Is this an antiwar film? Does it make any sort of political statement?

6. The film was criticized by some veterans/groups for inaccuracies. If this is the case, do they interfere with your opinion of the film?

7. What does the title mean to you?

Hurt Locker Aneither glorified the war as a scene of heroism nor condemned it for the political deception, wretched planning, and wanton loss of life that made those years so disastrous ... Instead. like the best WWII films, it focused on the tensions within a small group of men doing a dangerous but essential job. Do you agree with this, after having watched the film?

9. If war is a drug, as Hedges asserts, then how do we account for the difference between James and JT? JT is not interested in the Adrug@ of war, but only in staying alive and going home. And Eldridge himself, close to the end, seems quite fed up with James=s risky behavior.

10. Does the war-is-a-drug comment really apply to a character in the movie, or to the United States? To President George W. Bush?

11. Staying with that theme, Erasmus wrote Asweet is war to those who do not know it. Does this movie encourage us to add, maybe after seeing what James does at the end of the film, A... and sweeter still to those who do?

The Inagural History Department Film Night is presenting the award winning film The Hurt Locker (2008) rated R for war violence and language.

Professor Bill Cobb will introduce the film and lead a discussion afterward.

This film will be screened on Wednesday October 20th in the Pope Science Building-Room 202 @ 7:00 pm

Synopsis:
An intense portrayal of elite soldiers who have one of the most dangerous jobs in the world: disarming bombs in the heat of combat. When a new sergeant, James, takes over a highly trained bomb disposal team amidst violent conflict, he surprises his two subordinates, Sanborn and Eldridge, by recklessly plunging them into a deadly game of urban combat. James behaves as if he's indifferent to death. As the men struggle to control their wild new leader, the city explodes into chaos, and James' true character reveals itself in a way that will change each man forever.

The Motorcycle Diaries

To kick off the International film series this year we begin with a fantastic film from Argentina, The Motorcycle Diaries (2004).

The Motorcycle Diaries is an adaptation of a journal written by Ernesto "Che" Guevara de la Serna when he was 23 years old. He and his friend, Alberto Granado are typical college students who, seeking fun and adventure before graduation, decide to travel across Argentina, Chile, Peru, Colombia, and Venezuela in order to do their medical residency at a leper colony. Beginning as a buddy/road movie in which Ernesto and Alberto are looking for chicks, fun and adventure before they must grow up and have a more serious life. As is said in the film itself, it's about "two lives running parallel for a while." The two best friends start off with the same goals and aspirations, but by the time the film is over, it's clear what each man's destiny has become.

Come and watch this film with fellow film lovers on Friday October 1st in the UVU library Auditorium at 7:00 pm. This film is rater 'R" for language and will be shown in Spanish with English subtitles.

Richard Dutcher to Present FALLING (2008)

Cinema Studies club is pleased to sponsor a very special screening event.
Richard Dutcher, the arguable "father" of LDS film will be on campus to screen his film Falling (2008) and to have a discussion with viewers following the film.

Dutcher is the acclaimed director, writer, producer and actor of various LDS films such as God's Army (2000), Brigham City (2001), and States of Grace (2005). In 2007 Dutcher left the LDS church yet he continues to prove that he is not only an influential LDS filmmaker but a talented filmmaker period.

Synopsis:
Party-loyalist Captain Gerd Wiesler (Ulrich Mühe) hopes to boost his career when given the job of collecting evidence against the playwright Georg Dreyman (Sebastian Koch) and his girlfriend, the celebrated theatre actress Christa-Maria Sieland (Martina Gedeck). After all, the “operation” is backed by the highest political circle and Georg would be a considerable scalp. They wire and bug Georg's apartment so that they can hear every conversation and track every move. Gerd is obsessed with finding evidence against Georg, but over time he can't help but start to like the playwright - he realises he is a decent, intelligent man who truly loves his country and his girlfriend.After months of surveillance Gerd begins to change. His immersion in the lives of others - in love, literature, free thinking and speech - makes Wiesler acutely aware of the meagreness of his own existence and opens him to a completely new way of life. So when Georg begins to plan a resistance, Wiesler's unemotional façade is showing signs of erosion. While he observes the day-to-day life of Dreyman and Christa-Maria, he begins to be drawn into their world.

Happy Spring Semester Everyone! We all hope you had a safe and enjoyable holiday and we are very excited to begin our film screenings for the semester. We will be sponsoring various films this semester as well as continuing our International Film Series and Cult Film Series and will be posting the dates for all the film screenings soon. Coming up next week we are kicking off our International Film Series with the Academy Award Nominated film Hero (China 2002 Rated PG-13)
This screening will be held on Thursday January 14th and 7:00 pm in the UVU Library Auditorium.

The astonishing true-life story of Jean-Dominic Bauby -- a man who held the world in his palm, lost everything to sudden paralysis at 43 years old. The film follows Bauby's story from his instantaneous descent from a wealthy and congenial playboy and the editor of Elle Magazine, to a bed-bound, hospitalized stroke victim with an inactive brain stem that made it impossible for him to speak or move a muscle of his body. With the editor's mind unaffected, his only solace lay in the "butterfly" of his fantasies and memories. Because of Bauby's physical restriction, he only possessed one channel for communication with the outside world: ocular activity. By moving his eyes and blinking, he not only began to interact again with the world around him, but astonishingly authored his memoir via a code used to signify specific letters of the alphabet.

The legendary story of Phoolan Devi, based on her dictated prison diaries. Devi, India''s most famous and feared outlaw, was responsible for the massacre of 30 upper-caste Thakur men in Behmai, a village in Uttar Pradesh. The massacre, with its overtones of class warfare, made Devi a national heroine, worshipped as the Goddess of Flowers for the 80% of India''s lower-caste Hindus. After evading capture for five years, she surrendered to the police--on her own terms--before a cheering crowd of 10,000 supporters

Directed by Shekhar Kapur (ELIZABETH), this is a controversial movie based on the life of Phoolan Devi, India's notorious woman dacoit (bandit), who channeled her rage at her rape and mistreatment into violent action. Imprisoned in 1983 and freed in 1994, she eventually became a prominent politician and was assassinated by relatives of one of her victims. The controversy surrounding the film stems from the real Devi's fury over the way the formative events of her youth are depicted, and also from Kapur's refusal to meet with his subject, all the while proclaiming the "truth" of his narrative. Subjected to considerable scrutiny and potentially flawed, BANDIT QUEEN is nonetheless an excellent film. Music lovers will be fascinated by the score, composed by Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan, the renowned singer

UVU cinema Studies club is proud to present our 5th installment in this years International Film Series-

The film that gained Ingmar Bergman an international reputation, THE SEVENTH SEAL is an all-out religious allegory addressing that most-contemplated question, "Does God exist?" Set during a single day in the Middle Ages, the film concerns the philosophical quandary of a knight, Antonius Block (von Sydow), who returns from the Crusades to find his country at the mercy of plague and witchhunts. In the midst of his moral and religious confusion, Antonius is visited by Death (Ekerot), a black-cloaked figure who is ready to call the knight from this earth. Antonius strikes a deal with Death, winning a brief reprieve by inviting him to play a game of chess. Since Death apparently has a soft spot for chess, he agrees. The Knight and Death play as the cultural turmoil envelopes the people around them as they try, in different ways, to deal with the upheaval the plague has caused.

This low-budget freak show/cult classic/cultural institution concerns the misadventures of Brad Majors (Barry Bostwick) and Janet Weiss (Susan Sarandon) inside a strange mansion that they come across on a rainy night. After the wholesome pair profess their love through an opening song, their car breaks down in the woods, and they seek refuge in a towering castle nearby. Greeting them at the door is a ghoulish butler named Riff Raff (Richard O'Brien), who introduces them to a bacchanalian collection of partygoers dressed in outfits from some sort of interplanetary thrift shop. The host of this gathering is a transvestite clad in lingerie, Dr. Frank N. Furter (Tim Curry), a mad scientist who claims to be from another planet.

This showing will be interactive- although no food or drink are allowed in the auditorium. Come dressed up and ready to do the "time warp"!

Thanks to everyone who made it out to "Let the Right One In" last night! Once again we had a great turn out!

A very special, heartfelt thank you goes out to UVU Political Science student Vanim Zetreus from Stockholm, Sweden. He gave a great introduction to the film as it relates to Swedish Culture and Iconology. It was also great to have someone from the film's country of origin involved in our discussion following the film. He was able to answer many questions and shine light on various aspects of the film, its background, and Swedish culture in general.

Thank you to those who participated in the discussion and thanks to Tyler for facilitating. We here at the Cinema Studies Club love it when our showings stir discussion!

We are pleased to announce UVU's own Dr. Baktybek Abdrisaev has volunteered to introduce the film for us! Dr. Abdrisaev has been working as Distinguished Visiting Professor at the Department of History and Political Science since 2005. From 1997-2005 he served as Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the Kyrgyz Republic to USA and Canada. His diplomatic career began in 1992 with his appointment to the position of expert in the International Affairs Department of the Presidential Administration and further promotion to its directorship in 1993. Dr. Abdrisaev was also a Member of the Kyrgyz Parliament from March 1995 until March 2000. We will be honored to hear his incites on the cultures represented in the film.

A big thank you to all those who attended last nights screening of the samurai flick, SWORD OF DOOM! We hope you enjoyed the film as much as we all did!

Final Cult Classic Film of the Year "Reefer Madness"

Make sure to attend the final film showing of the school year. "Reefer Madness" was made in 1936 as a government propaganda film to warn parents about the dangers of marijuana use. It is so over the top and ridiculous that it has become an underground classic. The film will be shown this Monday 4/20 at 4:20pm in the Library Auditorium LI 120. As usual the film is FREE and open to the public. Be sure to stick around for the discussion afterward.

Final International Film of the Semester? "Once"

This is a film you don't want to miss. We will be showing this wonderful film on March 26th at two times, 7pm and 9pm, so come to whichever showing is better for you. Winner of the Oscar for Best Original Song for "Falling Slowly" as well as many other awards for the song or score or simply best movie. This is the last scheduled International Film for this semster, but we may have a special announcement coming up, so stay tuned for that. As usual, the screening will be in the library auditorium, LI 120, and you are welcome to stick around to discuss the film afterward.

An (unnamed) Guy is a Dublin guitarist/singer-songwriter who makes a living by fixing vacuum cleaners in his Dad's Hoover repair shop by day, and singing and playing for money on the Dublin streets by night. An (unnamed) Girl is a Czech who plays piano when she gets a chance, and does odd jobs by day and takes care of her mom and her daughter by night. Guy meets Girl, and they get to know each other as the Girl helps the Guy to put together a demo disc that he can take to London in hope of landing a music contract. During the same several day period, the Guy and the Girl work through their past loves, and reveal their budding love for one another, through their songs.

Cinema Studies Club Double Feature FREE

LI 120 (Lecture Hall in New Library)On Thursday, March 12th, the Cinema Studies Club will be showing two films in LI 120 (Library Auditorium):

At 7:00pm we will present the award winning Iranian film, "Taste of Cherry." Here's just a bit of the plot, but not enough to spoil it: "Iranian director Abbas Kiarostami won the Palme d'Or at the 1997 Cannes Film Festival for this contemplative film about a Muslim, Mr. Badi (Homayon Ershadi), who drives around the barren hills outside Tehran, flagging down passersby and offering good money for a simple job that he's hesitant to explain. He's planning his suicide and seeks someone to perform something of a symbolic eulogy."

At 9:00pm we will be showing Charlie Kaufman's (screenwriter of "Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind," "Adaptation," and "Being John Malcovich") directorial debut, "Synecdoche New York." I'm not going to say a word about this film, except that it is philosophical, thought provoking, and very cool.

Whether you loved the film or hated it, one thing is agreed: Ewan is hot!

I think our "Stay" screening went pretty well. People showed up, stayed through the film, and engaged in a nice discussion afterward.

My appearance as the "anti-jorgen" mainly backfired and served to cause confusion and annoyance rather than laughs. However, a person's got to try, right?

If this film was not your cup of tea, don't worry! We've got some great films coming up. On March 12th, we've got a double feature. At 7:00pm we'll screen a minimalistic film from Iran called "Taste of Cherry." At 9:00pm we'll be showing Charlie Kaufman's latest, "Synecdoche New York" (did I spell it right this time?).

Then, on the 26th, we've got one of my personal favorites. It's a nice little love story/ music film from Ireland called "Once." This is the film I've been looking forward to all semester, so I hope some of you will be able to make it!

Benigno (Javier Camára) is a male nurse whose apartment overlooks a dance studio run by Katerina (Geraldine Chaplin); he often sits on his balcony and watches one of Katerina's students, Alicia (Leonor Watling), and he finds himself becoming infatuated with her. When Alicia is severely injured in an auto accident that leaves her in a coma, Benigno discovers she has been admitted to the hospital where he works, and he spends his days caring for a woman he now deeply loves but has barely met. Marco (Darío Grandinetti) is a journalist who was assigned to interview Lydia (Rosario Flores), a well-known female bullfighter whose on-the-rocks romance with another toreador, "El Niño de Valencia" (Adolfo Fernández), has made her the focus of the tabloid press. The library started a Thursday Documentary Film Series that will show a variety of documentary films each month. This will take place at noon in LI213, so people are encouraged to bring lunch.

The film line-up is as follows:
March 26th - Beatrix Potter: Artist, Storyteller and Countrywoman
(58min) "Based on the biography written by Judy Taylor, this documentary visits the countryside Beatrix Potter loved so much and shows many of the original exquisite water colors which illustrate her stories."

April 16th - The Poetry Lounge (42min)
"This video features four live spoken word performances and subsequent interviews with the poets themselves.

All the poems revolve around the twin themes of the diversity and interrelatedness of all human beings. “Four Little Girls” by Thea Monyee speaks to young girls of all races, shapes and sizes who try to fit themselves to stereotyped media images of femininity. “Black and White” by IN-Q and Omari Wise-O Hardwick is a collaborative effort about racism and the necessity to walk in the other man's shoes. “Unified Love” by Brutha Gimel speaks of understanding yourself through the images others have of you. And finally, “You Move me” by Gina Loring shows how all the things that reach your heart define who you are and connect you to the rest of the world.

The life of the fisherman Mario changes dramatically when the famous Chilean writer Pablo Neruda settles on his little Italian island. Living in exile becuase of his political beliefs, Neruda needs a postman to deliver the huge quantities of mail sent to him by his admirers and Mario takes the job since he hates fishing anyway. The two become friends and Neruda helps the shy and clumsy Mario to win the heart of Beatrice, the beautiful waitress at the village's inn, by showing him the beauty and power of poetry.

Oscar Viewing Party

Please post your opinions about the club's Oscar Viewing Party. Right now we need suggestions as to location and feedback about food/drink options.

We will check to see if we can get any room on campus so it's large enough, but since it's on a Sunday that may not work. If there are only a few people, we can have it at someone's house, but my living room will probably only hold 8-10 people easily.

My inclination is to do pot-luck style for food and drinks, but we certainly can go in on a huge sandwich or platter, etc. Any other suggestions are welcome too.

Welcome to our club! Film Tonight!

Welcome to our Cinema Studies Club. I met several of you at Club Rush yesterday and today. I would like to point out that this semester we are showing two different film rosters. We have the International Cinema Series and the Cult Film Series. Neither of these will appeal to all tastes, but we tried hard to put together a little something for everyone. Our films are free to attend and are always held in the lecture hall of the UVU library. The lecture hall can be found on the first floor of the library in the southeast corner. It's a room that kind of juts out of the side of the building.

I just want to remind you all that there is a film showing tonight. It's the International film, "After the Wedding." Look a few posts back for the trailer and the posters for this semester's films.

Jacob Petersen has dedicated his life to helping street children in India. When the orphanage he heads is threatened by closure, he receives an unusual offer. A Danish businessman, Jørgen, offers him a donation of $4 million dollars. There are, however, certain conditions... Not only must Jacob return to Denmark, he must also take part in the wedding of Jørgen's daughter. The wedding proves to be a critical juncture between past and future and catapults Jacob into the most intense dilemma of his life.

It's a great time to be alive! The Cinema Studies club just finished a successful run of Fall 2008 films. And because I am prone to lapses of nostalgia, let me just some up what I saw as some of Fall's high points: Dr. Stephen Gibson talked comic books going underground for our screening of "Persepolis," Dr. Kenneth White inspired us with Buddhist philosophy for our screening of "Spring, Summer, Fall, Winter, and Spring. . ." and Dr. Rick McDonald got us to laugh ourselves out of our seats all throughout "The Rocky Horror Picture Show." Good times.

But what is on its way for Spring 2009 is going to be even better. Last semester we teamed up with UVU United for Peace and Justice to show films such as "The Times of Harvey Milk" and "The Weather Underground." And Spring 2009 will see this joint effort continue as we bring "Body of War" and "Taxi to the Dark Side" to campus. Plus, we've got 7 beautiful International Films that are really going to make us all better people. I'm not kidding. And we've got 3 of the most foul Cult Films that are going to make us worse people, bring us back to the start. (We strive for balance in all things here at UVU.) PLUS!!! we will be having a few surprise film showings, and trust me, you don't want to miss these gems that we've chosen.
